Peace is defined as a wholesome state of tranquility and harmony, in which disturbance, strife and strife are absent. The word "peace" has its roots in ancient Germanic language and originally referred to a state of security and freedom.

Often the concept of peace is contrasted with its opposite, namely war. The Dutch word "peace" from the 12th century meant legal protection against gun violence, which further emphasizes the dichotomy between peace and conflict.

Peace treaties mark the transition from war to peace, while declarations of war mean the opposite. Peace treaties signed in specific locations are sometimes called the "Treaty of..." mentioned, such as the Treaty of Versailles. The study of processes that lead to and maintain peace is called "irenology" called, and it is the opposite of "polemology." The term "irenology" is derived from the Ancient Greek word for peace, "εἰρήνη" (eirenē).
